**Lebanese Government**

The Lebanese President is elected by the Parliament for a six-year term. The Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister are appointed by the President in consultation with the Parliament. The president is required to be a Maronite Christian and the Prime Minister is required to be a Sunni Muslim. The Speaker of the Parliament is required to be a Shi'a Muslim. This confessional system is based on 1932 census data which showed the Maronite Christians as having a considerable majority of the population, something that is no longer true there. The Government of Lebanon continues to refuse to undertake a new census. A recent election was held on September 3, 2004, to extend President Lahoud's term for another three years.
President Emile Lahoud (since November 24, 1998).
Prime Minister Fouad Siniora (since July 19, 2005).
